Quantizing noise in an Analog to Digital Converter (ADC)

instead of a smooth continuous ramp from pure black to pure white quantizing noise forces the image to have a stairstep of discrete values. This represents a source of noise in a digital image. Fortunately the effect of this source of noise can be mitigated by the camera designer.
